Software for Reverse Engineering and Quality Control
OverviewIn Reverse Engineering PointMaster supports the input geometry of 3D-objects into CAD/CAM nevertheless these are free form models, complex prototypes, modified function models or even historical parts. In quality control PointMaster allows the data comparison between scanned point clouds or polygon structures of production parts with the given CAD model. It shows the deviation in different colours as well as in different report structures.
StructurePointMaster has a Windows based user interface with a functional tree structure, which is supported by many automatic functions. This structure allows an intuitive handling, so with relative short exposure time highly complex applications in reverse engineering, rapid prototyping and quality inspection can be solved with PointMaster.
PointMaster consists of four modules: Basic Module, Surface Module, Feature Module and Analysis and Alignment Module, which allows the user to select from these modules to fulfill the need of his application.

Basic ModulePointMaster uses modifiable Polymeshes, which allows to close holes, smooth corners and to reduce the noise. These are the basic elements of the surface reconstruction as the inside, outside as well as the neighbourhood relations are exactly defined. Based on the curvature conditions of the triangles the master profile lines can be defined easily by taking the support from a specific geometry navigator. Based on this information the parametric structure of the surface and the surface corners can be defined. The parametric definition of the Polymeshes allows to generate complete surface planes in an almost automatic mode. With only a few parameters the surface quality and the failure tolerances can be optimised quickly. For the data transfer into the CAD systems NURBS are used, as they can be modified and imported easily.
Surface ModuleThe Surface Module allows either an automatic or an interactive procedure for the surface reconstruction. In principle the automatic procedure can be selected for all kinds of standard applications like digitizing tool moulds, forges etc. In most complex applications of product design, a user optimized surface reconstruction can be achieved. In this case different parameters like reconstruction of corners, selection of corners, generation of concept styling surfaces and the definition of the continuity can be manipulated by the user. It is also possible to change the net and correct the failures. The net can be edited and can be mirrored along the object. The data thus produced as a surface can be be exported as IGES format and hence can be used in any other CAD system.

Feature ModuleThis module allows to extract all standard geometrical forms like cubes, cylinders, cones or spheres either automatically or manually form the pointcloud or the STL file. With this feature the parameters of all standard forms can be modified in the CAD system.

Analysis and Alignment ModuleWith the Analysis and Alignment Module, an efficient quality inspection can be realized in addition to the product development process. The data from the digitizing process can be compared with the original CAD data in order to control the deviation. With a standard IGS interface which is a valid format in most of the CAD systems the construction data can be imported. The next step is to align the model in the same coordinate system as the digitized object. With a good analysis programme, which includes a discrete method as well as statistical one, the failure analysis can be realized. Different calculation methods can be selected in order to present the results as different reports, which include graphical presentations in different
